Centurion was a professional officer of the Roman army. Centurions commanded a centuria, 30 to 160 soldiers and noncombatants. The Roman centurion was distinguished by his uniform – his armor was silvered, he wore his sword on his left side rather than his right, and the crest of his helmet was turned so that it went sideways across his helmet like a halo. Centurions had the privilege of riding on horseback during marches, and were allowed to have their family with them when they were being housed in a fort. They took heavy casualties, and always fought at the front with their troops.
